James Melton Weems Awarded Billy D. Young Memorial Scholarship

JamesWeems-NorthwestRankinGraduate-May2013.jpgJackson, MS. – James Melton Weems, a senior at Northwest Rankin High School was selected to receive a $1,000 Billy D. Young Memorial Scholarship by the Mid-South Chapter of the Independent Telephone Pioneer Association (IPTA). Sponsored by TEC, the given award is based on merit, academic achievement, and motivation to serve and succeed in all endeavors as well as through written essay. He will receive his scholarship during the Mid-South Chapter Summer Convention. The Scholarship is awarded to 25 high school seniors or undergraduate college students who are dependent children or grandchildren of an employee of a Mid-South Chapter Member company. The Chapter awarded a total of $25,000 in 2013.

The Mid-South Chapter of IPTA offers The Billy D. Young Memorial Scholarship Program in an effort to support fellow telecommunications workers in educating their dependent children. The scholarship is made available through the Mid-South Chapter and is supported by the individual pioneer clubs in the Chapter.

“TEC was honored to sponsor James Weems as a candidate for The Billy D. Young Memorial Scholarship,” said Joey F. Garner, Executive Vice President of TEC. “It is a wonderful feeling to know that we have helped in some way to contribute to James’ continuing education and achieving his dreams.”

Weems plans to attend Mississippi State University and major in Chemical Engineering. He is the son of Jim and Sharon Weems of Brandon.
