WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Foundation for Rural Education and Development (FRED) recently awarded a $2,500 community development grant to the Roanoke Rotary Charities of Roanoke, Alabama. The grant will help fund a Theatre Revitalization project that includes making the restrooms handicap accessible. This project is part of a larger renovation plan that started in March 2014. Once completed, the theater will provide a venue for community events, such as plays, ballets, movie nights and concerts.
Vickie Cummings, TEC Sales Supervisor, from the TEC Roanoke Division wrote a letter of recommendation on behalf of Roanoke Rotary Charities so that the application could be accepted and reviewed.
“TEC stands firm in in our commitment to downtown revitalization initiatives in our Roanoke market,” said Cummings. “We are grateful to our customers and are honored to have the opportunity to say thank you through this grant.”
The grant application was nominated by TEC, an independent telecommunications company that serves the city of Roanoke. TEC is part of FRED’s Donor Circle, which enables the company to nominate applications for FRED grants and scholarships.
The Ethyl Grant program provides matching grants to fund projects aimed at bettering rural communities. The grants, ranging from $500 - $2,500, are awarded on a rolling basis throughout the year and must be matched by the community. The program is sponsored by Bennet and Bennet, PLLC and Ericsson.
