TEC To Sunset Cable Television Franchise Agreement In Bay Springs

Joey Garner Bay Springs, Mississippi – May 15, 2018 - In a meeting today with the Bay Springs Board of Aldermen, TEC Executive Vice President Joey F. Garner announced that TEC-owned Video, Inc. will sunset its franchise contract agreement as a cable TV provider for the city of Bay Springs effective August 31, 2018.

“We appreciate the opportunity to have served Bay Springs since 1981 with traditional cable TV service. Unfortunately, the continual cost increases by networks, broadcasters and other content providers coupled with changing consumer preferences, make it uneconomical for our Bay Springs customers to subscribe to traditional cable TV,” said Garner. She continued, “TEC may be sunsetting this traditional video offering, but we will continue to provide the Bay Springs community with video entertainment solutions over our Internet network.”

The new and growing trend of Internet-based video consumption is referred to as “Over-the-Top” (OTT) streaming. TEC already enables popular options including Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Video and Sling TV over its fiber-based Internet network. “We know that local programming is important and we plan to provide preferred alternatives that are more cost effective,” added Garner. “We are committed to guiding our customers through this transition and we look forward to bringing our community more entertainment choices as we invest in upgrading and expanding our network.”
